The Waldsteinia ternata looks like a strawberry plant, but the Waldsteinia has yellow blossoms and does not carry strawberries.

The Waldsteinia ternata (Barren Strawberry) is an easy ground cover. Also in difficult circumstances (draught, shadow) and on poor soil this plant is a beautiful, perennial plant, which covers the ground in a nice and fast way. In winter or at extreme high temperatures it may seem the plant is dying. But this strong ground cover will recover almost all the time, and will show new offshoots soon.

The Waldsteinia ternata is satisfied with a shadowed spot. This ground cover demands little, but prefers a soil which is rich of humous. The ground covering growth provides a thick carpet and combines perfectly with other plants. For example as planting under shrubs, in rock gardens and along paths. Single, bright yellow, star-shaped flowers appear in bunches, during their blooming period, which contrast beautiful with the green leaves. They can also grow (non-edible!) berries. The Waldsteinia ternata originates from South-East Europe.

Maintenance Waldsteinia ternata

The Waldsteinia ternata (Barren Strawberry) is a perennial plant which requests little special care. One of the most important focus areas is enough water in extremely warm and dry periods. The Waldsteinia is a creeping ground cover, but definitely no usurer. Therefor this ground cover is controllable and needs no pruning. At most you can cut or stand out the edges once a year, to keep the ground cover inside the borders.

• Pruning in spring is not necessary, but can boost the Waldsteinia with new fresh leaves (it will lead to a slightly less bloom).
• Poor blooming in spring can also point to a shortage of potassium in the soil. This can be fixed by a suited fertilizer with a high potassium level (around September).
• In case of excessive growing, you can easily stand out the excess part of the plant.

When to plant Waldsteinia ternata?

There is no impossible period to install the Barren Strawberry. As long as you stay out of periods of extreme draught or frost, this can’t go wrong. This ground cover prefers a fertile soil, with enough moist available. When given a few weeks to take root in the soil, the Waldsteinia will manage draught by sun and frosting better, since they can extract moist from the soil.
