Application Lesser Periwinkle red / purple

The Lesser Periwinkle red / purple (Vinca minor ‘Atropurpurea’) is extremely perennial and especially suited as a ground cover, also because of its fast growth. The plant originates from the Mediterranean area. Apparently it has built up the needed hardiness in the meantime. Therefor it can be installed in almost every location, it requires little from the soil and is a fast grower. Summarized: a plant that demands little and offers a lot. Its blooming period is long: from March to July.

In Belgium the Lesser Periwinkle red / purple is a common plant, in The Netherlands it is part of the wild and protected flora. This ground cover thrives in small gardens and wins from the Ivy as green decoration, also because of its long bloom.

Maintenance Lesser Periwinkle red / purple

Fertilization

If you want to enjoy your Vinca minor ‘Atropurpurea’, and optimize your ground covering, you need to make sure the plant mats receive enough nutrition. When the plant mats are installed on a nutritious soil, they will flourish naturally.

When you find your ground covers to show a lack of nutrition or a lesser growth, you can boost them by adding an organic fertilizer. We recommend several brands, like Ecostyle and DCM, with fitting products. Most organic fertilizers work up to a 100 days.

When do you prune?

Most ground covers are creeping. Therefor it can be necessary to prune the plants at the edges, to prevent them from growing outside their borders.

Although the edges can be pruned all year round without damaging the plant, we discourage to prune during frost, and therefor during winter. A cloudy day is best for pruning.

When do you plant Vinca minor red / purple?

The Vinca minor plant mat by Covergreen® can be installed all year round. It is best to plant them right before a longer period of frost or draught. These circumstances can cause the new planting to dehydrate. Plant mats need the chance to take root before facing a dry period, so they can draw enough moisture from the soil.

Imagine a carpet of Lesser Periwinkle red / purple, combined with some high bushes and other perennial plants. These will combine perfect and flourish in such an environment. At Covergreen we offer 3 sorts of Lesser Periwinkle in our assortment: this Vinca minor ‘Atropurpurea’, the Vinca minor ‘Alba’ and Vinca minor (blue).
